Pop/rock music in the 21st century is a played-out corpse picked over by overprivileged boys and girls hoping to manufacture a personality for themselves out of something that other people think is cool. That is why Tunabunny thinks of pop/rock as something that should be destroyed, or at the very least subverted, but would probably be better for everyone involved if it simply ceased to exist. The members of Tunabunny are interested in revolution, which, contrary to popular thought, ceased to exist in the pop/rock world a long time ago, even as a latent impulse. As such, Tunabunny wonders just what it is doing here, and what exactly it hopes to accomplish. You start goofing around with friends, you decide to try and start playing shows, come up with a name, record some songs, let someone release them for you and put your art out into the world… and it comes back to you in the form of a review.

Most bands just want to see a good review. They would be happiest with something like, ‘Not only are Tunabunny the most innovative musical performers in history, but they’re so commercial that it’s inevitable they will make millions of dollars and be sexually desired by people all over the world.’ But for us, a review is like the second half of a good conversation. We’re just curious what people have to say.

Besides, we’re already sexually desired all over the world.

One of the fun parts of being in a band is choosing how to present yourself. Beyond the music, there are pictures, videos, record covers, and press releases to be created. And each one, whether you want it to or not, communicates something about your band. But when you do those things a little differently from the commonly agreed upon method of pursing fame stardom and massive amounts of $$$, some people tend to think you’re just being jerks. Or that you don’t take what you do very seriously. Or that it’s some kind of negative statement about them.

They’re wrong, of course. But that’s okay.

Tunabunny has never gotten a bad review. Honestly, we’re not sure if people even write bad reviews anymore. But in our (small, tiny) review archive, some people have understood our intentions better than others.

This guy understands us completely. And as people who hate being misunderstood, but also hate being deliberate & obvious, it was very gratifying to read. I think the next time someone wants to interview us, we’ll just give them his e-mail address.

OH! Except for Scott Creney. He never got sick. He just laughed at us as we passed around a cocktail of vitamins, b12 and St. John’s Wort.

Hi!

We are playing Athfest tonight in the lab at Cine. The show was put on by some friends of ours that have an art studio over on Barrow street that, in their current incarnation, go by the name Cunny Island Bemusement Park. It was one of the most exciting art openings I have ever been to. I think they hit the nail on the head with this:

“…A far grosser impotence lies with those who believe they are somehow confronting the moral order by affecting an eccentric or “weird” pose. This type is the worst sort of moral agent, since they believe they are combating culture-at-large while they are, point in fact, fully in support of a “correct” culture: they will attempt at every turn to absorb into their order of “weird” anyone or anything they can find immediate use for, meanwhile rejecting what fails to suit their proscribed demands. Never is there an admission of useless elements, of glorious expenditures, committed sacrifice, or genuine terror—they play at politics, seemingly incapable of other means, and adopting a “weird” facade is merely done to disguise an apparent lack of authentic engagement with the world.”

A song that made me want to pick up a guitar. Just look at the way she moves, so effortlessly and yet with such purpose, and tell me that the greatest of our species have not been moving in this manner for some 200,000 years. It makes me feel O.K. about the things I can’t control in the world, and fills me with a certainty about my ability to make the right decisions when the time comes.

The words are so small on the insert of Share the Joy I had to go into the bathroom to read them. I had to squint and tilt and lean over the sink. I read the words to “Lake House.”

Oh my lord what a shallow home, I’m wide awake out on the lake, at 3 am I sleep again, watch the tides rise right between my eyes, It’s in my head, but I’ll be dead before the sun will rise again

I am floored. I don’t know if this is right, but I feel like this album was made for me. My age, my gender, my youth, and my band. And I don’t care if I sound selfish, or petulant. If you had spent your whole life filled with people telling you about what it felt like when they found their favorite artist, making music right then, in their particular moment, you would hold it in your arms and refuse to share it too. At least, you would in the beginning.

This album gets it right, the balance between optimism and cynicism, dark and light, control and acceptance. “Can’t you see I’m living in hell?” Yes! I know! Let’s hold hands and face the darkness together Vivian Girls.

O.K. Vivian’s. Now that you know how I feel…you wanna come over to my place and watch some Akira Kurosawa films or what? It’s all alright with me.

Tunabunny got to hear Jesse’s final mixes of our new album...

Tunabunny got to hear Jesse’s final mixes of our new album last night.
